Installing OneTouchTrain

OneTouchTrain maintains a local database of the train schedules in the device. This database is empty when the app is first installed and so it must be initialized from our servers. The above screen is presented upon installation. When you touch Get Schedules, the device will contact our servers and download the latest copy of the schedules.

A successful download of the schedules results in a display of the above screen. It should be noted that the MTA changes the schedules infrequently, averaging maybe six times annually. When they change, we compile a new database and install it on our servers. Since there is no set schedule for these changes, the app has been engineered to check our servers for new schedules the first time you use it on any given day. If there is no new schedule or the app was unable to contact our servers for any reason, it simply continues with the current local copy.

Setting Up Your Favorite Routes

This is the main screen of OneTouchTrain. This app enables you to define your favorite routes of travel.  Then when you search for a Favorite train, based on the time and your current location, it will present your with the schedule for the next trains on your route. We therefore recommend that at this time you set up at least one Favorite Route. Optionally you may skip setting up a favorite route and do an ad-hoc search using the Any selection under Search Schedules. Touching Favorites under Set Up results in the above screen. There are no entries since we have not yet defined any Routes. Touching the Add icon takes us to the following screen where we can input the details of the route.

If your trip does not involve a change of trains, then you should set the Transfer Trains switch to off. This will result in quicker calculations of the train schedules.

Connections & Transfers

OneTouchTrain will calculate the schedule for trips that involve a transfer from one train to another. In order to minimize the calculation time, you must specify the preferred Transfer Stations by turning on the respective switch or switches. Again, the minimum number of transfer points should be enabled in order to minimize the calculation time. Touching Favorites under Search Schedules results in a list of routes which are derived from your prior definition of Favorite Trips. If you have enabled Route Auto Selection in the settings for this app, based on your present location it will automatically pick a route and present the schedule for that route as shown on the following screen. In other words, in the above example, if it determines that you are closer to Atlantic Terminal, then it will show the schedule for the Atlantic Terminal to Babylon route

Above is an example of the display for a schedule of trains that involve transfers.  Touching any train will show the schedule of stops on that train. This is an example of the display of the schedule of stops for specific trip which involves a transfer. Note that the Stops on the Connecting Train are also visible by scrolling the screen on the device.
